An Eagle has landed.
In the hangar of one of the major hangars hired by the Republic of Lorell one of the pilots, Tzemela di Nero, more known as Tzeme, finaly got a small break. Listening to the chatter and familair sounds around her she heard booted footsteps approaching her from behind. Without turning around she poured up a second cup of tea. “It is just newly brewed, Lyzza. Just as you want it. Dark , hot and strong” “Tss good . Last time you gave me cold tea with bread crumbles, Tzeme.” the other woman replied. “Are you standing here gathering names again?” Tzemela glances at her crew and friend in the typical technican overall. “Me? Of course. Some of the new ships did exellent landing. Keep your eyes open for that Eagle. Seems to be a promising one and just what we need here….”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword-Eagle ambled from his ship across the hangar. He had found an outpost hangar of the Republic of Lorell, a start, possibly an in to the group of disenfranchised nomads he had met up with in Kellog. Then, after helping them out from a scrape with the Vanduul, he had been ordered to withdraw his flight, no explanation no room for manoeuvre. He had obeyed the order as the loyal subject he was, but a feeling of unease had entered his mind. A resolve to find out more itched his psych. His path to the civilian world had begun
Broadsword scanned the Hangar floor, there were several ships undergoing maintenance and two in their last minute preps for launch. He spotted the Hangar floor Officer and made his way over to him. As he approached the man with red hair and a sparse ginger beard he could see a curling of his lip into a sneer. He was eyeing his Squadron Leather Jacket with a look of distain. “That your Freelancer Navy,” he said it scanning the badges on his jacket(edited) “It is, I have a cargo of Protein and Med Supplies for the Republic of Lorell.” “You lookin’ to turn a profit jet jockey?” “A fair price is all, I was looking for someone who may be interested, I may be of some further assistance.” “UEE ain’t welcome here, buddy. You best sell quick and skedaddle.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
An alarm sounded throughout the Hangar. Incoming Vessel. All personnel clear Pad Four. Ground Crews report to stations. There was a sudden bustle of activity as Pad 4 was cleared and a six crewmen made their way to their appointed locations around the Pad, getting down on one knee and lowering their heads to await the new arrival. The ship that arrived was a slightly battered MISC Reliant Sen, painted in a low-key silver black with the symbol of Lorell painted under the cockpit, out of sight unless you were specifically looking for it, and the wings decorated with a profile of the head of the Roman goddess of Wisdom and Warfare, Minerva. The Sen lowered its landing gear and landed on the Pad with a slight bump, and a crewman shouted “Minerva touched down!” The ramp at the back of the Sen lowered, and the crewmen headed toward it made a point of scuttling out of the way and keeping as inconspicuous as possible as the occupant strode down to the Pad.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword who was still working out the lack of welcome he had received from the Hangar floor Officer, turned to look at the Reliant Sen and at the apparent deference shown by the Hangar crew
“What the hell…?” he muttered
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
The appearance of the woman who stepped off the ramp probably did nothing to ease any confusion he felt. She was of average height, approximately 5’5”, of lithe build, dressed in black, fitted combat trousers, calf-high boots and a fitted black tank top. Over this, she wore a slighty-too-big grey-brown duster coat and at her waist was a series of pouches on a belt, as well as a hand-held scanner and a single pistol. Her face was fair and almost too pristine, her hair purple-black with deep violet streaks, and her eyes…. Red. Deep scarlet red, unblinking, and seemingly unfeeling. She wore an expression of casual disinterest as she approached the Floor Officer, who stiffened as she approached.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword felt stunned by her presence and stepped to the side to allow her direct access to the almost cowering man
“Ma’am…” he uttered and almost immediately regretted it. those eyes…
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
The newcomer cast her eyes briefly over the stranger, her gaze clearly catching sight of the badges on his jacket. However, she did not flinch nor respond, the impassive look on her face remaining as it had been. Instead, she turned to the Floor Officer and asked, “Mr Orsen-Hey, is something the matter?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
The Floor Officer jerked his head up and almost looked the woman in the face, he shook his head in the negative
“Nnno Dr Payne, no, I was just advising this UEE guy to make himself scarce. He is just after a profit from the Republic.”
Broadsword looked at the witless HFO with disdain.
“That is not my intention Doctor.” He said evenly.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“I have cargo for sale, that is true, but for a fair price.” He almost smiled. “But I am also interested in your Republic,” he then realised that that could be misconstrued, he faltered, “in a good way.”
Shit, he thought, I buggered that one up
“I mean….”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
Dr Payne turned to face the stranger and stepped a single step closer. She eyed the patches again, and from this distance, it could be seen that there was something not quite natural about her eyes. “What sort of interest, Mr….?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“The name is Eagle, Doctor.” He smiled now, and although the red eyes of the woman were unnerving, he didn’t feel threatened. “Clark Eagle, although most call me Broadsword, part of my callsign.”
“I came across some of the Republic of Lorell Fleet once. we batted a few Vanduul together, and,” he paused wondering how to cover the awkward part of the tale. “well we had to part.”
“Colour me intrigued.” he joked, and wondered if a sense of humour approach was the right one, with this clearly important person. “I am a free agent now so…”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
The Dr blinked once; slowly and deliberately. The move seemed somehow forced, a learned action, as opposed to a subconscious one. If he had been paying attention, Broadsword would have definitely noticed that this was the first blink she had actually made. Her lips pursed a moment and she tilted her head to one side. “Mr Orsen-Hey, please get back to your duties. I will assist Mr Eagle.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“Yes Doctor Payne, of course Doctor Payne.” the HFO said and quickly turned to his console desk and began to read intently, flashing his fingers furiously over the screens, determined to show he was busy and not just dismissed.
Broadsword-Eagle smiled again, partly because to the way the HFO had been dealt with and partly because he had not made quite as big a hash of his introduction as he had thought.
“That is very kind of you Doctor.” he said
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“I would not call it kindness, Mr Eagle,” she shrugged, lifting her left arm and waving the sleeve of the coat down to expose her wrist. Her mG, placed to sit on the underside of her wrist, rather than on top of it, sprang to life as she continued talking. “You come in here brazenly displaying the tokens of life in the UEE. Were you a spy, that would either be an incredibly stupid move, or an incredibly clever one. Either way, I have a contact that could tell me which.”
She motioned for him to follow and began to lead him toward the back of the Hangar, where a lift was situated.
“Many people here have good reason to be afraid of, or even hate, the UEE. But the Republic does not turn down good, honest trade. You met one of our less UEE-sympathetic citizens just now. What he experienced justifies his suspicion of you, I can assure you of that. However, if you can convince myself, and the RSA, that you are genuine, then we will have no further problems.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Despite the disparity in height Broadsword found himself almost running to keep up with the Doctors purposeful stride
“I assure you I am not a spy,” he said to her back as she strode towards the lift. “I am also not ashamed of my service, these patches and badges mean a great deal to me, they are links to many friends both living and dead.”
“Besides, lets be honest, the jacket looks cool…” He regretted the flippancy almost immediately, remembering those eyes.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“I’m not asking you to be ashamed of your patches, Mr Eagle,” Dr Payne waved a hand over her shoulder, but did not turn around. Instead, she carried on walking until she reached the elevator. She waited for Broadsword to join her on the platform before setting it going, raising up above the hustle and bustle below. She turned and leant on the railing, gazing out at the people working below. The tone of her voice changed slightly; quieter, solemn, and somehow, a little sad. “There are many people here who see those patches as a reminder of the pain and sorrow they have experienced. There are many innocent in the UEE, those who know nothing of us, of our history… Our pains…”
She paused a moment.
“The problem is, the guilty and the innocent all look the same to us. It’s very hard to tell which is which, until one stabs you in the back.” She turned to face Broadsword. “I am not asking you to be ashamed of those patches or your service. Nor am I asking you to forget your friends; your losses…”
“I am asking you to be aware that for some of us here, those patches remind us of the scars we carry. Some of our scars are more obvious than others.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword looked down feeling her sorrow emanating from the lithe frame
“I am sorry, I was insensitive.” He said. ” I would like to know of the pain and it’s cause.” he paused trying to get a read from the bowed head. “I may be able to help.”
They rode up in the lift together both looking down at the bustling Hangar deck. Both locked in memories.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
After a moment of silence, the lift came to a halt and the Dr turned to the opening doors, beckoning Broadsword to follow. Any hint of her earlier sadness had disappeared; replaced by the same indifference she had before. Nobody except perhaps Admiral Pope would say it to her face, but the Resting Bitch Face was back.
“Mr Eagle, before you encountered a part of our fleet, had you ever heard of the Republic?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“No.” he replied.
“We were on the boundaries of Vanduul space, I was surprised to see Passenger transports that far out. It was the lead fighter pilot who told me who they were.” Broadsword remembered the exchange. “He knew what would happen when I reported back to my Carrier.”
“It was a short meeting, only ship to ship, but….” He struggled to put into words what his feelings were. “I have thought about that fleet ever since.”
“There is nothing in any records anywhere, and I have friends who know where to look.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“Let me guess…. You got an Authentication Zulu order?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword could not contain his surprise
“Yes, er how did…” he stopped realising he should not have confirmed her suspicions, past loyalties were hard to forget.
He reflected on the security breach that may have occurred to allow this top level code phrase to be known. He looked into the red eyes again, feeling even through the emotionless features the strength of this person
“How do you even know that?” He spoke more calmly than he felt. “Let alone what it means.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
At first the Dr did not respond. She glanced over her shoulder and a wry half-smile crept across her face. “I don’t give away all my secrets on the first meeting, Mr Eagle!”
Turning back to look along the corridor, she added, “Let’s just say, there have been many Lorelli that have been at the, ahem, unfortunate end of a Zulu order.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
He understood the underlying meaning to that response. He felt a wave of guilt, this was the only incidence in his Military career that had caused him concern. The fate of that flotilla / fleet had always been a nagging barb in his conscience. He wanted to ask, but didn’t want to hear.
“My Naval career is over, my time and my thoughts are my own.” He looked at the Doctors back as he spoke the next words, words that may affect the rest of his life. “I want to help, if I can, if you want me that is. I am not about to give away any secrets,” he smiled then. “Sounds like you already know them. I can fly though, pretty good I would say, I know the charted systems pretty well and I know men. If any of these skills are useful, let me know.”
He half turned as if to leave the conversation, but not wanting to. then he remembered.
“Oh, and I have a cargo you may want to buy… you see this offensive jacket. It gets me into some places others can’t go, and gets me deals others can’t get.” He turned back and continued looking at her back waiting for the reply, one way or the other.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
She laughed shortly, turning to face him as she stopped by a door. “Mr Eagle, my name is Dr Aelyrya Payne, Secretary of the Treasury for the Republic of Lorell, Temporary Overseer of the Department of Commerce and Trade, Head of the Department of Science and Advisor to both the Speaker’s Office and the Office of the Admiralty. I cannot promise you entry into Lorell, but I can promise that you will be treated fairly and given a good chance to prove yourself to those who do make the decision.”
She opened the door and gestured towards it, “If it’s answers you seek, come on in. If you just want to sell and run, then head back the way you came. The choice is yours. But I will warn you…. If the safety of the Republic is compromised because of an action you do… There will be repercussions.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword-Eagle’s smile turned into a broad grin.
“So you’re smart and you are royalty. Doctor Payne I stepped aside for the right person today.”(edited)
“I promise that as long as my own boundaries are not breached, I will learn those answers, keep your secrets, and help in whatever way I can.”
Broadsword followed her into the room
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
The room was a medium-sized, well-lit office space; clean, tidy, and barely used, from the looks of it. The room featured a desk, two chairs, one on either side of the desk, a long sideboard and a tea urn. There was also a coffee pot, but it was on the floor, unused, and there didn’t appear to be any coffee grounds either. Instead, there was a wicker basket with rows of different flavoured teas, including some alien varieties. A cooler appeared to contain milk, and there was a fancy jar filled with sugar. Only one photograph adorned the office. It showed a man and a woman, holding a baby wrapped in a pink swaddling cloth. The man was tall and fair skinned, with jet-black hair and brown eyes. He wore black, thin-rimmed glasses and sported a thick beard. The woman was also fair-skinned, slim and beautiful, with a shock of red hair and bright green eyes. The room was, otherwise, undecorated; it’s white walls devoid of personality. Aelyrya motioned to the urn, “Help yourself.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
*He nodded and finding a china mug, fancy he thought to himself, poured a cup of boiling water from the urn he took a bag of what was described as black tea and dropped it into the mug. He found a spoon at the end of the sideboard and lazily turned the bag over within the mug.”
“Can I make you one?” He asked. Not only being polite but also trying to show that even a Military thug like him could be refined. He laughed at himself as soon as he thought it.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“No thank you Mr Eagle,” she sat at the desk and activated the console there. “I’m just calling a friend to sit with us so we can sort out your paperwork. Once this is done, you can just wave this in the face of anyone who doesn’t believe you’re here to help.”
Her fingers moved quickly over the console, then flicked back to her mG.
“If you don’t mind my asking, Mr Eagle, what is your cargo today?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword finished stirring his tea, and took a sip, it was hot and he scalded his lip, putting the mug down gently, he turned back to the Doctor.
*Protein concentrate, from Gallete Family Farms best produce and Medical Supplies from Hickes Research Centre on Cellin. I got a 20% discount on both so happy to pass 10% of that on. It’s a good deal, I can’t promise to always get those prices but I can try.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“Well, we were running low on both those things…” Aelyrya quickly skimmed through the fleet inventory. “How much including the 10% discount?”
Tzeme (Tzemela)–04/27/2018
Down in the hangar Tzemela and her technican Lyzza had noticed the incoming ships, recogniced the MISC Reliant Sen. As usual all new arrived ships needed to be refueled and the hulls checked for outer damages. They continued to the next ship in this endless row and shared news and worries with the other technicans as usual. “Let us hope that some of the traders are bringing us some useful goods this time. All these repairings are lowering our metal storages…” said Lyzza in a concerned tone. Tzemela nodded and they continued their work.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword, thought, he was not good at this part, he had spent his life in warfare not commerce, he picked up his mGlas and typed in the figure adjusted for the appropriate expenses. He showed it to the Doctor.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
As Broadsword calculated, Aelyrya sent out a quick mG message: @Admiralty @Command Staff @Council of Captains Could the first available member of Command/Council Staff at Stanton Hangar 12 please report to Office 2C ASAP. Many thanks, SecTreas
With the message sent, she turned to look at Broadsword’s calculations, “Hmm…. Seems fair….”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/27/2018
Pascal happened to be in the vicinity and decided to trundle along to whatever business was being enacted. She still stood tall though, bandaged like a mummified corpse but kicking nonetheless. She rapped on the door in a lazy fashion, awaiting permission to enter.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
Hearing the knock, Aelyrya looked up, “Oh, that was fast! Enter!”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword had picked up his now cooled tea while he waited, the door opened
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/27/2018
She lurched in, her tall frame making it through the door with just a few inches of clearance. “Ey Aely.” She responded with a little wave, her eyes soon moving to the next individual.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword tried very hard not to stare, he wasn’t quite sure what he was seeing, he glanced over to the Doctor waiting for an introduction
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“Pascal! Good, good! This is Mr Clark Eagle, and he wishes to assist the Republic,” Aelyrya looked over to Broadsword. “Mr Eagle, this is Councillor Pascal Rhetorius.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“Councillor,” Broadsword held out his hand for a handshake not sure if that was appropriate he half withdrew it and found himself in that awkward position waiting the bandaged woman’s response.
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/27/2018
She soon reached over, giving him a firm shake of the hand. “Pascal’ll do, nunn’a that title nonsense.” She stated with a very small smile.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
With relief, Broadsword shook the strong Councillors hand impressed with the her firm grip and positive approach
“Pascal, very pleased to have met you, my family called me Clark, my friends call me Broadsword, or something inappropriate for present company.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
Aelyrya snorted lightly in the background. “Titles aside, this company honestly doesn’t give two shits about propriety!”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword suddenly felt at home, these were civilians, in an awkward even dangerous position not of their own making, and yet it was almost like being in his own Officers mess back on the Annie
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/27/2018
“Sword’ll suffice ah reckon.” She nodded softly, standing back up straight with a crack of the back.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“Sword will do fine” Broadsword replied
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“Oh, Pas, that crack just reminded me, I have some results from your tests. The good Doctor sent a message to go over them with you when we both have a moment,” Aelyrya turned back to her console. “If you don’t mind though, if you could just sit in with me while we go through Mr Eagle’s papers, make sure I don’t get bored halfway through or something…” she waved her hand airily. “You know how this political stuff is.”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/27/2018
“Good doc’…pssh…” She exhaled deeply, none too happy with the thought of them, but carried on anyway. “I’d not mind, but I thought y’liked paperwork there, slick?” She stated with a very expressionless look about her, giving the air of seriousness before a sly smile broke it’s way through, curling at the sides.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“I like math problems and puzzles,” Aelyrya raised an eyebrow, giving Pascal a look. “Ticking boxes is not my style. Besides, with two of us here, it’ll go quicker!”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword watched at the two obvious friends worked together over the console
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“Alright Mr Eagle, basically, you need to fill out a little form on this console, while we have a chat about your interests and how you wish to help the Republic,” she spun the console to face him. “Answer honestly as you can, include anything you may feel relevant. I warned you before, that anything that hurts the Republic will have repercussions. So I think you would do best to tell us even the smallest thing, rather than risk it coming back to bite you in the arse later.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword, leaned towards the console, he was very aware that the Doctor was being deliberately formal and suspicious of him, it marked contrast to the councillor who had only just met him. He scanned the “little” form it was anything but, it had a detailed almost physiological profile series of questions that he proceeded to answer honestly. He was many things but deceitful was not one of them.
When he had finished, he looked up at the pair.
“I think that is all of them answered, what else would you like to know?” He asked with a, he hoped, disarming smile on his face.
Broadsword hoped that the information about his missing Father and his UEEN twin would not go down badly. Kara, was due to leave the UEEN herself soon, his last comm with her had been distressing. The carnage on Vega had affected her badly, and she was serving out her discharge time on Sol. It was her that had picked up the chatter about this Hangar complex and started this whole ball rolling.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
Aelyrya spun the console back round, her gaze fixed on Broadsword the whole time he was filling it out. She hadn’t blinked again since that first one; focusing entirely on the micro-expressions crossing his face. While not a psychologist or behaviourist, by any stretch of the imagination, she did have a few tricks up her sleeve for telling when someone was lying… After a moment, she looked down at the answers, positioning the screen so that Pascal could see them too. Her face remained stoic, giving nothing away. Finally, she looked back at Broadsword.
“When did you encounter the RoL flotilla and in what system?”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/27/2018
Pascal pulled the screen closer with a single hand, her expression remained much as it had been, a slight smile as she combed over the file as the other probed further.
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“Kellog, I was on patrol with my squadron, whilst our carrier assisted transport systems for supplies to Vega. My wingman detected tactical comms which peaked my interest, we jumped in and helped out.” Broadsword remembered the time and then smiled. “Their Commander told me he didn’t need help.”
“He also told me that, er, that I would be ordered to withdraw once the Carrier knew who they were.”
“He was right.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“Did you catch his name?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
“He said Brady.” Broadsword could remember the comm as if it was yesterday.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
Aelyrya’s gaze briefly flicked down to her mG, apparently running a check. “How did it make you feel, when you were ordered to withdraw?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword looked into those red unblinking eyes as they looked into his soul, he felt ashamed.
“Sick, I felt sick, I knew there must be many innocent civilians aboard those transports, they were in the most dangerous part of space at that time and I had the means to protect them. I did not understand the order but knew I had to obey it. That doesn’t mean I had to like it, it’s just what we do…” he faltered and looked down.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“If you could change anything about that encounter, would you?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/27/2018
Broadsword felt compromised, he knew he had to answer the question truthfully but was sure his answer would not be well received.
“Honestly,” He cleared his throat unnecessarily, “No, I was an officer in charge of a squadron of men in enemy territory. I did what I was trained to do.”
“But you know,” he continued, “It didn’t feel right and it became a contributory factor to me only staying in the UEEN for just over another year. It is why I sought you out, it is why I am here.”
He looked into the those red piercing eyes again.
“I hope you understand that.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
A smile spread across Aelyrya’s face. “Don’t look so worried, Mr Eagle. Had you changed anything, you would likely not be here now.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/27/2018
“The question isn’t meant to trip you up. It’s meant to force you to really think about the things that brought you here. For example, on your form, you mention your Father is missing. You felt that poignant to mention. Most people would just assume him dead and carry on as if it was nothing. But you… You state him as missing. I get the feeling that you have more regrets than just the transport, Mr Eagle. And I think, perhaps, a part of you hopes to find answers in the places where the most secrets are kept.”
April 28, 2018
Broadsword-Eagle–04/28/2018
Broadsword-Eagle, was silent as he absorbed the Doctor’s analysis, she was right of course, both the twins had been affected by their Fathers last message, where he had been when he found the worm hole he hadn’t said. He had been absent for most of their childhood and yet this last 11 or 12 years….
“I hope he found what he was looking of or at least found peace.” He said aloud.
Realising that he had verbalised his thoughts, he tried to smile.
“Is there anything else you would like to know, now that you have me confessing?” He tried to joke.
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/28/2018
She sat up s bit, crossing her legs, only the left of which sat bandaged, her gaze falling over Broadsword in an uncharacteristically lacking expression. “Sphalerite, Amazonite or Diamond.”(edited)
Broadsword-Eagle–04/28/2018
Broadsword looked at the bandaged Councillor incredulously. “I am sorry I don,t understand the question”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/28/2018
“Jus’ pick one.”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/28/2018
“Choice is entirely yers, it has no bearin’ on the interview. Diamond is hard n’ precious, but all too common and overhyped, Sphalerite is a crystal form’a Zinc ore, and it’s refractive index is higher than diamond, but it’s softer. Amazonite is a form of Microcline Feldspar, naught much to say there but it’s damn pretty.”
“Wuz’ jus’ a question, see if’n I had another rock-fan in t’midst.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/28/2018
Aelyrya suddenly laughed, apparently entertained, “Pas is our resident minerologist.”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/28/2018
Broadsword, cracked a smile from his confusion, he realised that he was being included in a joke, which felt reassuring
“I would go for the Diamond, then, it has practical use, is in itself pretty and besides someone told me once it is a girls best friend, so it might get me out of trouble sometime!”
April 29, 2018
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/29/2018
Aelyrya pursed her lips for a moment. “Mr Eagle, what would you say is you best personal quality, and what skills do you possess? Obviously you’re a good pilot, you have some experience in command and you appear to have the safety of others as a concern, but what is it about you that makes you special? What will you bring to the Republic?”
Broadsword-Eagle–04/29/2018
Broadsword was not surprised by the question, variations of it had been asked at many promotion boards and mission selection interviews. That didn’t mean it didn’t unnerve him though. He liked to think he was a modest man, proud but modest, this question challenged that modesty, forced him to think what he did, indeed, bring to the table. He paused and thought carefully , before looking into those soul piercing red eyes.
“I know how to kill, I know when to kill, I know who to protect and I will give my life to protect them.”
He paused, to let that sink in, and then smiled
“and just to be clear, I can fly, I mean really fly….”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–04/29/2018
“And what above all else do you wish to protect?”
April 30, 2018
Broadsword-Eagle–04/30/2018
“That is easy, my crew, my friends and those who for no fault of their own are being preyed upon. In that order.”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–04/30/2018
“Ah like that answer..”

Broadsword-Eagle–Last Tuesday at 8:26 AM
Broadsword smiled “Have I passed, Doctor and Councillor?” He said looking between them, his mind wandering over the potential of this new phase of his life. “If so, where do we go from here?”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–Last Tuesday at 1:29 PM
“Pub, either way. Boss-lady?”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–Last Tuesday at 2:05 PM
“Just, one more thing, Mr Eagle,” Aelyrya looked down at her mG, her face deathly serious. “Would you like to know what happened to that transport?”
Broadsword-Eagle–Last Tuesday at 2:29 PM
Broadsword was not expecting this, although in some ways he did, the dread that the news was bad and it was down to his loyalty was a weight to bear, maybe too heavier one.
“Yes.” He croaked, suddenly any humour had disappeared, he awaited the axe to fall.

Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–Last Thursday at 8:49 PM
Aelyrya looked solemnly at Broadsword, her face almost completely devoid of emotion. “After leaving the system, the transport was intercepted by a squadron of unmarked interceptors we recognised as Squadron Zero. Someone had told them where the transport was, long before you found them, and had sent the Squadron after them. Their intent was to capture the civilian transport and kill the escorts.”(edited)
She glanced over at the photograph on the side. “Lt Brady reported that they would have survived the Vanduul assault if you had not intervened. But they would not have been able to hold off Squadron Zero. They received two casualties amongst the escorts and three civilians were killed in the assault, but, the rest of them made it.”
Broadsword-Eagle–Last Thursday at 9:12 PM
the relief washed over Broadsword like a Tsunami, he felt weak at the knees and looked around for a seat. In the end he perched on the end of the Tea sideboard placing his cup deliberately on the surface.
“You have no idea how glad I am you told me that.” he said. “I am relieved in more ways than you can imagine.”
He paused, looking from one to the other again, this time feeling that he was now part of the team.
“Where do you want this cargo delivered too?” He said, bringing the subject back to business.
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–05/11/2018
Aelyrya was about to respond to Broadsword when there was a buzz from her mG. Glancing at it quickly she saw that it was a message from the Quartermaster’s Mate, who, after being found asleep at his post, had been punished by being issued logistical duties at Stanton Hangars. Keeping these Hangars was borne out of necessity – nobody here really felt comfortable operating “within enemy territory”, as it were. Nobody here really knew who they were, believing the group to be a private militia with a small civilian contingent. Here, the Lorelli people could not wear the colours of their heritage, nor could they brazenly announce who they were, the most basic phoenix symbol being the only thing to identify them. Their words were always guarded, and even the slightest surprise occurrence was enough to put this place on lockdown. Now, a surprise had occurred. Aelyrya scowled at her mG and then looked back at Broadsword.
“Mr Eagle, it seems that fate wishes us to keep company a little longer. You need to head to the Logistics Office to register your cargo so that we can check it and authorise purchases, while I need to attend a, peculiarity, in the same office. If you would follow me please…”
“Pascal, will you be joining us?”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–05/11/2018
She sighed with a nod, stretching before she sat up out of the seat, ready to get a move on.
“Gotta find out bout my body some’ow.”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–05/11/2018
“Good good, alright then, let’s head out. Hopefully this is just someone being a bit of a burraidh…” The insult slipped off her tongue easily, suddenly making the light lilt in her voice heavier, and more obvious to place. Without another word, she headed back along the corridors toward the lift.
Broadsword-Eagle–05/11/2018
Surprised Broadsword followed the odd couple out of the office door, he had not expected that exclamation from the forthright Doctor, clearly something was wrong.
Broadsword-Eagle–05/11/2018
as he followed them down the bright corridors he was surprised how fast the seemingly badly injured Councillor was, easily keeping up with the long strides of the black clothed Doctor. They both have an urgency about them, he thought.
Coun. Pascal Rhet–Last Wednesday at 5:08 PM
(That works.) Pascal jogged on, alongside @Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas in hopes that their journey would bear fruit.

Broadsword turned to the Councillor
“Do you know what is going on?”(edited)
Coun. Pascal Rhet–07/01/2018
“Not quite, @Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas Mind fillin’ us in?”
Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas–07/01/2018
“Not a clue,” Aelyrya shrugged. “I just got a message requesting the presence of a member of @Command Staff or @Speaker of the Council ‘s office. As an advisor to both, I’m privvy to the pings.”
Coun. Pascal Rhet–07/01/2018
“Welp, they got plenny’ on the way then.”
Broadsword-Eagle–07/01/2018
Broadsword looked between the two most important people he had met since seeking out Lorell. He knew that they had accepted his application, and yet was unsure how he was to proceed.
He turned to the Doctor, still a little phased by her deep red eyes…
“So who do I see about the cargo Ma’am”

Broadsword-Eagle–07/05/2018
without saying a word, the Doctor looked into Broadswords eyes in a distant fashion, as if she had forgotten he was there. She then shook her head as if in annoyance and nodded towards the Officer of the Deck type character at the stand up desk
Realising that he had been dismissed he gave a wry smile “Ma’am, Madam Councillor,” he said as he flicked a vague salute and strode towards the harassed looking officer.
*As he got to the desk he overheard a conversation between two of the support staff, they were discussing something about a ship dumping a live cargo in the path of the fleet, it could well be the reason the Doctor had been called to the office. He though had a cargo to shift and more to learn about his current host and contractor *
“Officer?” He asked of the young man in front of him. “I am Broadsword-Eagle, I was told to report to you regarding a delivery of cargo.”
The Officer looked up from the data pad that made up most of the standing desk in front of him. At first he looked blank, and then after a few heart beats a realisation came over his young worried face. “Eagle, yes I have had some thing about you, sorry we have an incident going on and…” “You are looking for top cover…” Broadsword filled in, having been in this position in his junior days, the Officer almost smiled. “You understand,” he said, “I am waiting for some of the senior staff here.”
Broadsword, looked at him, smiled and nodded his head towards the Doctor and Councillor
“I think they have arrived.”
Broadsword saw the relief wash over the young officers face, he realised that if he didn’t move quickly he could be left in the background of this drama
“If you could just brief me on the delivery instructions I could get out of your hair before the stuff strikes the air conditioner”
The Officer stifled a laugh. He raised his hand to attract the attention of the Doctor and Councillor
“I will pass you over to my Logisitics Sargent, if you don’t mind Eagle, I think I need to brief @Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas before this gets any worse.” He then called to an older NCO over on one of the bigger data monitors. “Jayne, Mr Eagle here has a cargo delivery to make I have just forwarded you his details can you brief him for me.” It was not really a question, the smile on the NCO’s face though told him that she appreciated this young officers manner.
“Of course Sir,” She smiled at Broadsword, “if you could just come over here Mr Eagle, we can talk over the details.”
Broadsword flipped the Officer of the Deck a salute and followed the NCO
Behind him he heard the crisp questioning from the Doctor

Broadsword-Eagle–Today at 12:34 PM
The sergeant escorted Broadsword to her Logistics terminal, appearing on the top right of her screen he saw a document open with the Stamp of “Urgent” in red across the top. It appeared to be a note from the Doctor and quoted attachments in the notes below it.
“If you could just give me time to read the details, Mr Eagle” She said with a polite smile.
Broadsword waited as the obviously experienced and capable Sergeant browsed through a collection of six documents and finally got to the details of his cargo shipment
“You seem to have impressed @Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas , Mr Eagle.” She said with a wry acknowledgement. “I have never seen a Resident Alien application completed so quickly.”
“I don’t know about that,” Broadsword answered, ” but I have met up with Lorell before, back in my service.”
Sergeant Jayne Morraffe, as her uniform badge indicated, nodded
“So I see,” She nodded the smile had returned. “Thank you for your assistance then, and for your offer of assistance now.”
She scanned her screen again tapping a few locations and then turned
“The Cargo needs to be delivered to the fleet, the ROLS Sarpedon to be exact.” She paused and pursed her lips reading an incoming com. “Landing Bay 3, their OOD has just indicated, you landed on an Idris before Mr Eagle?”
“Yes,” It was Broadswords turn to smile. “and Commanded one.”
The Sergeant scanned the badges on his jacket and noticed the Command wings and the small badge indicating the Idris Frigate “Clyde Tombaugh”, She allowed herself some time to scan the other badges and medal ribbons adorning the vanity leather jacket.
“I see a lot of experience there Mr Eagle,” She said. “I wouldn’t go wearing that jacket around the fleet though.”
“I have already been given that advice by the good Doctor @Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas .” He said, still smiling. “I will be discrete.”
“There is another reason,” Her smile broadened, “We, as in the Republic Military, are on the lookout for good pilots just now. If @ADM Galadriel Pope, CNO see’s that jacket you may not have much choice.”
“I have down my time in that role,” Broadsword explained, “Need some civvie time now. I can help but not that way. Besides I am only a Resident Alien, newly minted to boot.”
” I Understand you Sir,” She said, ” Just don’t let @RADM Dev Garason, CAG see your record. He has his ways.”
Broadsword-Eagle–Today at 1:00 PM
“No need for the Sir, Sergeant, Clark is my given name, although I have been Broadsword for so long it kind of takes precedence.”
“Jayne.” The Sergeant held out her hand and Broadsword shook it. It was a firm grip.
“Now,” she moved on. “The problem here is that we need to get you an escort to the fleet. The only people that can issue the Fleet’s Beacon Code is the Sarpedon Command team. They will interview you when you have dropped off the cargo.”(edited)
“Another interview.” Broadsword raised his eye skyward.”
“Afraid so,” Jayne nodded. “Think yourself lucky the @Dr Aelyrya Payne, SecTreas has fast tracked you through a lot of the bureaucracy. The Sarpedon Command team will probably already be doing their intelligence scans.”
“You own that Freelancer in the Hangar yes?” She asked(edited)
“Yes Jun’ko Trent, they put me on spot 4 next to the The Khartu-al” He confirmed.
“Ah @Tzeme (Tzemela) yes she has just filed a flight plan to the fleet, if we are lucky she won’t have left yet.”
Jayne spent some time tapping some positions on her screen and then frowned
“Nah that won’t work, she is lifting off now.” Jayne tapped a com button and spoke to the Hangar Sergeant who had greeted Broadsword on arrival, he recognised the superior attitude. The conversation was quick and curt.
“Ok,” She relayed to Broadsword. “There is a domestic transport leaving in an hour. It is for @Coun. Pascal Rhet. so it might be a little delayed, if you could wait on stand by in your ship, the Pilot knows you will be doing a coordinated Quantum Jump with him, he will contact you when you power up.”
“Thank you Jayne.” Broadsword held out his hand again. “It has been a pleasure.”
“For me too Clark,” she replied “and for the record, I think the jacket is cool. We can’t hate everyone in the UEE.”
The sergeant indicated the door that would lead Broadsword back to his ship, he nodded and left.
